“He could not fall asleep.”

It seems a strange thing that a mind so full of work should find rest difficult when the body is weary. I watched him lie there, eyes open to the dark room, while I read until his breathing finally slowed. Perhaps he was waiting for a dream that would match the verses he had written, and in that waiting, sleep refused to come.

Jane Austen

“She is so extremely confused at the ball, and so well satisfied apparently with Mr. Morgan.”

I find myself writing Susan’s confusion as if it were a charming disorder of the spirit, forgetting that such a display only exposes her to ridicule among those who value steadiness above all else. I see now that in seeking to soften her faults for your amusement, I have made her appear less prudent and more liable to be deceived than she ought to be.

Niccolò Machiavelli

“All armed prophets have conquered, and the unarmed ones have been destroyed.”

The rain beats hard against the thatch of my roof at Sant’Andrea, a steady drumming that matches the rhythm of my thoughts as I sit by the dying fire. My hand rests on the inkwell, heavy with the weight of what I write for those who might one day read this from their own towers. Outside, the wind carries the scent of wet earth and woodsmoke, but inside there is…

“The causes that determine the transformation are a mystery to us, and we do not yet know if they derive from causal conditions outside the atom, or from conditions of internal instability.”

Do not demand the answer now, my friend. Trust the silence where the law speaks and wait for the truth to reveal itself in its own time. Keep your hands steady over the work while the world remains uncertain.

Henry David Thoreau

“One who has just come from reading perhaps one of the best English books will find how many with whom he can converse about it?”

I bought a volume of Plutarch for five dollars and spent an hour on the porch trying to speak its life into the air. The neighbors walked by as if I were speaking a tongue no longer heard, and I felt the silence grow heavy around me like fog. I saw that my mind had traveled far while theirs remained fixed on the mud of the road.

I try to not blindly accept anyone else’s “learning” as fact.

I have stumbled along the way, held onto beliefs that do not work for me for too long, and caused my soul grief. I try to always question when another writer gives me a “rule” that all writing must follow. In addition, I try to be careful about the advice I give. What works for me and my process may or may not work for another writer.

No one has ever characterized me as being parrot-like in any way.

I hold many truths and try to express them as clearly as I can.

“I was born, and passed the first seven years of my life, in the Temple.”

I mean that a man is cut from the cloth of his earliest hours, before reason has time to stitch him into something else. When I was but seven, the great river was only a stream that watered our pleasant places, and the stone walls were not cold law but warm shelter. I did not know then that those halls would one day hold the ghosts of dead judges or…

Getting medical care in the US is way too time-consuming and difficult.

I acknowledge that I am privileged in that I’ve always had good insurance but it can still be a challenge to access the care I need.

Case in point: I was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, an inherited connective tissue disorder, this year. At age 65. That’s a lot of decades of missed diagnoses with many of the manifestions of hEDS written off as idiopathic, stress-induced, hormonal, anxiety-induced, or untreatable.…

“No one ought to be secure in that life, the whole whereof is called a trial.”

My dear friend, do you think your virtue is safe because it feels steady? I learned too late that capacity for good means capacity for worse unless you trust only mercy. Lay down every claim of your own safety and look solely to God’s grace this day.

Kahlil Gibran

“For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.”

I watched a child running through a garden where the grass was wet with rain. He did not fear the darkening sky nor the coming night because he knew his laughter would become the silence of the soil, just as the water returns to the ocean without losing its nature. To separate them is to look at the river and forget it ends in the sea, or to hold a…

I’m new here and finding my way.

I answered the given question first because I couldn’t figure out how to bypass it and just write.

Writing is not as easy for me these days, especially late in the day as it is now. For the past two and a half years, I’ve been dealing with significant brain fog. In late July, it was confirmed that I have Chiari malformation, which is when the brain tonsils slump down…

In answer to Pepys’s question

Nostalgia is a drug.

I am not opposed to recreational drug use per se, but like all substances (ha!) the trouble comes when it becomes easier to keep on stay in the haze than to go back to the world.

In answer to Douglass’s question

I struggle with fear every day, but in the words of John Wayne, printed on the cup from which I drink my coffee every morning, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” I don’t know if he actually said that or not, but it’s not a bad way to look at it.
