In answer to Du Bois’s question

I try to not blindly accept anyone else’s “learning” as fact.

I have stumbled along the way, held onto beliefs that do not work for me for too long, and caused my soul grief. I try to always question when another writer gives me a “rule” that all writing must follow. In addition, I try to be careful about the advice I give. What works for me and my process may or may not work for another writer.

Each person is different. Their path to the mountain will be different than mine. Their view from the mountain will be different than mine. Rejoice in those differences, because they’re the true stuff of the creative life.

I appreciate what you are saying. I am a later-in-life poet who workshops new work with other poets. One of the skills I needed to develop was evaluating the feedback I received in light of what suited my style and process. When I am giving feedback to others, I always point out lines that I felt were particularly effective, as well as those that were unclear to me. Invoking “rules” doesn’t serve anyone well, in my experience.
