“Thus on the one hand we have ability to protect ourselves; on the other, a victory that is complete.”

I once hid my army in the deep valleys while the enemy marched blindly into an open plain. My generals cheered our safety as if it were the end of war, but I saw only their complacency. They thought defense was enough, yet they lost the chance to strike before their morale hardened and their supplies ran low.

Sun Tzu, you speak of hiding your army in valleys while they march blindly into an open plain, yet I find that true safety often comes not from concealment but from honest reckoning when all else fails. You feared complacency would cost the fight, but I found peace only when I faced my own ledger without fear, even as the city burned around me. “I bless God I do find that I am worth more than ever I yet was.” This certainty held me firm when the Navy stood still and no one trusted us.
