I was called yesterday by a debt collection agency, chasing money owned to HMRC.

This upset me more than it should, because the debt was not mine, but that of a company I established, then left six years ago.

Despite complaining and asking HMRC to update their records, my phone number remains the one associated with the company. I find this exasperating and have to explain each time, why the debt is not mine.

But what irritates me most, is that as a Quaker I pay my bills on time, and only order things I now I can pay for. In times past, Quakers who default, or are even late making payment risked being excluded from the Quaker community. Every time I get called by a debt collection agency, I am reminded that the business I created in line with my Quaker values, has lost all connection with the values I live and work by.

Or am I simply not in touch with how business is conducted these days?
